Tell us about your holiday traditions.
Submitted by Talk is Cheap.
I pretty much stopped going home to visit my parents on holidays simply because it was never a vacation. whenever i went home i had to clean and cook. that ain't relaxation as far as i'm concerned. plus holidays at the crib when i was growing up were always filled with anxiety. if you didn't get good grades or weren't "good" you didn't get shit but had to watch folks open their gifts. when i got old enough to have a job i managed to work on the holidays.
after that for years, i was soured on holidays. in fact, i hated them. i always worked on holidays to avoid even thinking about them and i would have chinese food so i wouldn't have to eat any "traditional" foods.
now that i'm with my girl, we have awesome holiday traditions.
on christmas eve, we drink rum laced egg nog and go through our stockings. we found a really cool small tree that we can put away each year and pull out around thanksgiving. its really cute and we've even put our own little hello kitty ornaments on it. this year i'm thinking we'll get some new pj's to wear on christmas eve. this year i'm also going to have her FINALLY watch A Christmas Story (probably the best Xmas movie EVER!!!).
on christmas day, i cook a big traditional dinner. but we also go to the movies either that day or the next. so its turkey again with stuffing (can't get enough of that), greens, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes & gravy--pretty much thanksgiving but on xmas day. And of course we get up early and open presents, take a nap (cause we get up like kids at 5am), and just hang and watch television and celebrate with the chief (if you listen to wendy then you know what i'm talking bout).
on new years eve we don't do much we usually sleep. heh. but i think one new years eve it'd be cool to go out to a club or something. but we're such homebody's i doubt if that will happen. I'll probably cook a decadent dinner--steak, shrimp & crab legs, baked potato with all the trimmings, maple & pecan green beans, flaky biscuits.
but on new years day this year we're going to go see Avenue Q at the State Theater. I've been wanting to see this musical since I heard about it!
So that's about it for traditions!
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)

3) Like Glue--Sean Paul
4) Crown Royal--Jill Scott
5) Things Done Changed--The Nortorious BIG
6) Spread My Wings--Troop
7) U Remind Me--Usher
8) You Got it All--The Jets
9) Breathe--Jill Scott
10) My Type--T.I.
What do you absolutely refuse to eat?
Brussel Sprouts
Jello
Pudding
and a variety of things that I see on
Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations
bizarre foods with Andrew Zimmerman
(although these two shows are the bomb!)
If money were no object, which five luxury items would you rush right out and buy?
Submitted by lorilyn.
1) A ring for my babes
2) Nissan Pathfinder or BMW X5 4.8i SAV
3) A house in Indianapolis (for living)
4) A black macbook
5) A house in Las Vegas (for playing)
I don't know if any of these things are considered to be "luxury" except maybe the BMW but the reality is, if money were no object I would make sure I set myself up to where I didn't have to work another day in my life!
What's some good advice you've given to a friend, but not followed yourself?
Submitted by robbbiedobbbie.
When anyone comes out to me I say, "find the community...i.e. go to GLBT community centers...don't seek the community in a club. And don't get into a relationship right away."
I didn't follow this advice because I didn't have anyone give it to me. When I came out (officially to myself and everyone else), I didn't know anyone but white drag queens and of course their lives were centered around the club.
If someone had given me this advice I might not have taken it but I hope that I would have. Its funny to me that people don't realize that "the club" is just for fun and shacking up right away always leads to problems. Learn who you are as a gay person before you start adding other folks in the mix.
But its funny cause coming out is like experiencing another adolescence and what do all other adolescents want to do? HAVE SEX!
And of course, the easiest way to get sex all the time without some level of fear is to shack up. I don't know if gay men have this same problem but lesbians certainly do...thats why we have that joke about the UHaul.
What was your worst cooking experience?
I'm going to say this right now. I can cook. I cook really well and this story is no reflection on that expertise. Also, for the record I make some mean homemade popcorn!
Anyway, I was in my senior year of high school, about a month before graduation. I was in the kitchen whipping up some popcorn when the phone rang. I went into the family room to get it and then not long after heard the alarm.
The stove was on fire!
I managed to douse the grease fire with flour (thank God my dad was a firefighter) but the damage was done to the hood fan and the entire kitchen ceiling. I was in deep shit. I didn't get a whipping (yep, i was still getting whippings at 18) but i had to spend the whole weekend washing every dish in the cabinets and cleaning the ceiling.
Plus, my graduation present was a new hood fan for the stove.
Tell us about an event that changed your life forever.

I've had a lot of events but the one that I think of right away is when i got evicted. there was a time when i was so not good with money that it was not even a joke. i had discovered the world of online lesbians through a now defunct service called WBS and i would just take my check and rather than pay bills or rent just go travel to visit women. and yes, attempt (cause it didn't always work) to get my fuck on.
anyway also through that service i made some good friends and actually i met two people who saved my life during that time (i'll get to that in a minute). i was on a trip visiting my now ex girlfriend in minnesota (my then online love interest...i.e. femmeturnedstud) and i got a call saying i'd been evicted.
my whole world fell apart.
at the time of my visit i'd had another girlfriend who lived in texas. i regret hurting her so much but i felt like i had no options. so i begged femmeturnedstud to allow me to stay in her on campus apartment. somewhat out of desperation i applied to UMM where i was visiting and was accepted on the spot. it was great...but at the same time i was technically homeless.
apparently because my name was on all the bills (how that happened i'll never know) and i hadn't paid them in like months the phone, cable, and lights were shut off in this house that i'd lived in with two other people. supposedly they had to live in this house without hot water, electricity, television, or a phone for months until they could move out too. part of me feels guilty about that but as i get older i wonder if that was true or did they just say that to make me feel guilty. clearly they had an eviction notice and they could have submitted that to the companies and gotten those things taken care of. also, i wondered why they never asked me for the bills. we were supposed to split it three ways.
but anyway...
i ended up staying with femmeturnedstud until the end of the school year and then one of my best friends, nyaquarian, who I also met online came from New York, helped me buy a bus ticket and let me live with her and her family until i was able to go back to school in the fall.
i'm glossing over a lot of crap that happened but thats the jist. i'm not sure what would have happened to me if i didn't have those two people watching my back or if the actual event didn't happen to me. i mean would i have gotten my degree? would i be in minnesota? would i be in a relationship right now? lots of questions!
essentially what came out of all that was that i got my degree in Political Science, i met two really good friends/mentors, i became a more stable and honest person, and of course possibly the best thing i was able to make a connection with my sweetie.
one day i may talk about my strange, interesting, rocky but eye opening relationship with femmeturnedstud because it was certainly one of those relationships that i think changed the course of my life.
yeah i think that was one of the things from my adult life that changed me forever.
What is your pet peeve, the one thing which really drives you mad?

Okay what I hate the most is when I'm in a public restroom and there are tons of open stalls and someone goes to into the stall right next to mine! I hate it. I think its gross! It really tweaks me out.
What's on your Top 5 video games list?
Submitted by mileena.
These are actually my top 7! If I just had to narrow it down to five i would say GTA: San Andreas, God of War, Lego Star Wars II, Knights of the Old Republic, NBA Street. But its hard to leave Prince of Persia and Lego Star Wars just hanging out there.
What's your favorite way to keep in touch? Phone, snail mail, email, text message, Vox, _____ ?
Email. Seriously, its funny how far away that most people have gotten from writing...actually siting down with a pen and paper and writing a letter. I remember when i was in high school and i was taking a typing class (which i failed) i complained that writing was much easier than typing. almost 20 years later i think its very funny that i can type faster than i write and i cannot remember with clarity my life without access to a computer.
when we first moved to minneapolis and we didn't have our DSL or cable hooked up. i didnt know which was driving me more crazy...no tv or no computer. part of the reason why i didn't take the job i was offered not long ago was because despite the school being a technical community college their technology was totally lacking. do you remember the computers where you put the screen on top of the tower? yeah i didn't either until i saw them there.
anyway, needless to say i can't live without my computer access and email.
